Conan O'Brien: Head injury brings on a rerun

Why was tonight's new episode of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" abruptly replaced by an August rerun with guest Jeremy Piven? Turns out O'Brien was rushed to the hospital via ambulance after injuring himself while doing a stunt.

E! Online reports that "O'Brien was running down a flight of stairs when he slipped and banged his head, possibly sustaining a concussion."

A statement from the host indicates that he's recovered enough to joke around. "Last thing I remember I was enjoying the play with Mrs. Lincoln, and the next thing I knew I was in bed being served cookies and juice," O'Brien said.

Tonight's scheduled guests were Teri Hatcher, Seth MacFarlane and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

With such um...lousy ratings...I smell a publicity stunt.

Come now... I mean, I'm pretty cynical but I believe it was for real. It's easy to get injured running up or down stairs (that's why our moms told us not to do it), and most fans will probably just decide to go to bed early or switch over to Dave instead of watching "Tonight."

On the rerun Friday night, IIRC, one of the two lady human cannonballs quipped that if Conan were to try it himself, his hair would act as a protective device for his head. (Yes, I watched the rerun — the first half of it, anyway — instead of switching over to Dave, of whom I've grown less fond over the years.)

I dont know if he would stoop down to pulling something like this for publicity but if he did bang his head, then it was a good idea to get thoroughly checked, cuz thats just dangerous otherwise.
